Optical fiber splicing

Important methods employed for the splicing of optical fiber cables are fusion splice method, v-groove butt splice method, elastic tube splice method and loose tube splice method. In fusion splice method, thermal bonding technique is used. The risk of change in chemical composition does exist in this method. V-groove splice technique uses a v-shaped groove which brings two fibres into mechanical alignment. Then both the ends are epoxied. Elastic tube splice method is used for the splicing of multimode fibres. Loose tube splice method is similar to v-groove method. Here corner of a rectangular tube is used for the alignment.
