The launch of low earth orbitary satellite opened scope for personal communication services. PCS is a high frequency, low power wireless mobile communication system. PCS enables personal mobility, terminal mobility and service portability. Personal mobility feature permits users to access subscribed services and allow call/receive options. Terminal mobility enables mobile terminals at any location to be located and identified by the network. Service portability allows management of user service profiles. There are three categories of PCS-broadband, narrowband and unlicensed. For short distance operation, unlicensed version is used. For paging functions, narrowband PCS is used. For cellular and cordless handset services, broadband is used. PCS provides roaming facility. PCS can be used in all environments like urban, rural, commercial, residential, forest, mountain and recreational areas. PCS supports handset portability of any size. The five major components of PCS network are terminals installed in the mobile unit, base stations, wireless switching offices, PSTN central office and database of customers. Taiwan PCS architecture is supported by integrating wireless and wireline systems on the basis of the intelligent network.
