Fibre optic sensors

Fibre opric sensors offer several advantages over conventional sensors. Lack of electromagnetic, radio-frequency and electrical interference is the main advantage. The other two main advantages are wide band width and operation at high temperatures. For this reason, space research uses such sensors extensively. Pressure, temperature, strain, torque, vibration, acoustic properties, electric field, magnetic field, rotation, acceleration, pH level, chemical changes, fluid level and fluid flow can be measured using fibre optic sensors. The major components of a fibre optic sensor system are an optical source, an optical interface, a few optical fibres, an optical modulator, a photo detector and a signal processing equipment.
